Two woodturning methods produce the same outcome
Просмотров 5 тыс.Год назад
Doing just a few of these large pegs, as production turners we try to adapt and find the quickest way. These two videos show using just one tool then the more orthodox method. It shows that while time was saved roughing out with the skew and not changing tools, time was lost by using the skew instead of the spindle gouge even taking into account of swapping tools. So when doing a batch of these...

    00:14 00:38 As a brand new noob, this is an excellent tip for me, clear and concise, while so many other videos on this point have had me confused. However a few seconds later I hear; lift till the bevel rubs, (I get this part) but then I hear; lift slightly more and it will naturally ''tip''.... saying this as the skew rotates counter clockwise and is no longer flat on the tool rest as best I can see. shrugs... So if I have this right, is it; Set skew flat on the rest lift handle till bevel rests on the project Rotate handle slightly ? Is it ABC , or ABTC anchor bevel, twist cut? 1:04 2:23 45 degrees (less catching super clean cuts) 2:42 ''but will still cut no matter the angle.''

    • @woodturner21
      @woodturner21 13 дней назад

    Hi. Say, a lot of bad hss quality chisels out there. I am going back and buying older tools that are high carbon steel. I find the neck of the tangs are much thicker and the handles are made of better choice wood. What are your thoughts on this?

    • @woodturner21
      @woodturner21 17 дней назад

      I find HSS far superior to carbon steel. I make my own handles I’m a woodturner after all. As for the tang I’ve never had a problem with a tang on a skew. The gouges tend to be from round bar and stronger than old tangs. The only tool with a weak tang is the spindle roughing gouge but that’s not an issue if used for spindle work only.

    Really fantastic. Is the playback at actual cutting speed or is it sped up?

  • @balisticsquirel
    @balisticsquirel Месяц назад

    This is undermined and let down by incredibly frustrating terminology for the beginner (who would likely be watching a 'basics' vid). Like "the leading edge of the skew is the only part of the skew touching the tool rest". So the edge (as in cutting edge, as in most fore [leading]) touches the tool rest? Or, "beceause the front edge is the only part of the skew that's actually touching the tool rest, we want to be cutting low down on the cutting edge". How are these two things related? It's not obvious. Which is the "front edge"? And what does it mean to be cutting "low down" on it (with it?)? Means lift the handle so it drops on (into) the workpiece right? Someone with zero background needs to be told or ideally shown the reason for something to need to be a certain way. For instance, WHY does the straighter angle of approach lead to snatches more than a more oblique approach? Is it because the cutting edge acts like a rudder and forces the path of the skew out of coontrol? Or because the tip is closer to the workpiece? One needs to know this to know what to be watching for. More, i would say, than knowing things like various beading techniques.

    Steve, I’m a huge fan of your work. I’m trying to practice coves with my skew. It’s hard to tell when you do it if you have any bevel support. In this video as you cut the deeper part of the cove, is your bevel normally supported? Assuming it’s, where is it supported, by the outer rim/edge of the cove? Thank you!

    • @woodturner21
      @woodturner21 2 месяца назад

      The support is the same as if you are doing a sweep so the bevel is supported and on these tight sweeps you are correct the user rim tends to be where the contact is.
